Kiersten will identify lichen, how and where they grow, and explain their importance as air quality indicators. Strawberry Vale School has been home to this study since 2012 and has resulted in grade five student photographs being used on UBC’s eFlora website. Expect to see many varieties of lichen on display, as well as the student's work.

"Kiersten Brookes is an award-winning teacher who dedicates herself to connecting children to nature so that they develop awareness and appreciation of the world outdoors." (Thank you Lenny Ross and Sylvia Samborski). She has taught for 20 years in Victoria as well as in Lloydminster and Marshall, Saskatchewan.
As well, Kiersten is a gardener interested in native plants and their medicinal qualities, hardy geraniums, non-GMO food production. In response to our screen-centric society, she brings children outside as much as possible.  Her students develop a strong stewardship ethic as they learn to care for the environment of their school ground and community and take action that contributes to the health of watersheds, ecosystems, and the whole planet.
